Governor appoints undersheriff to top Lee County spot

Gov. Rick Scott appointed Carmine Marceno Jr. as Lee County sheriff effective Tuesday, 13 days after the sheriff announced his pending resignation.

Marceno will fill the vacancy left by Mike Scott, who has two years on his term.

Lee County Undersheriff Carmine Marceno will be recommended as the interim sheriff after the retirement of Sheriff Mike Scott.

Scott, sheriff for 14 years, cited family obligations in announcing his resignation Sept. 10.

The next election for the four-year term is scheduled for 2020.

"Today, I am proud to appoint Carmine Marceno Jr. as Sheriff of Lee County," the governor said in a news release issued Friday afternoon. "With Undersheriff Marceno having nearly 20 years of law enforcement experience and having worked closely with Sheriff Scott, I am confident that he will work every day to protect and serve Lee County.”

The outgoing sheriff thanked the governor for his leadership and said it has "truly been an honor to serve the Lee County community."

"Undersheriff Marceno is an experienced law enforcement officer who has worked with me for years, and I have the utmost confidence that he will keep working every day to protect our families and visitors,” he said.

Marceno, 46, of Fort Myers, has been serving in the Lee County Sherriff’s Office since 2013.

The outgoing sheriff had named Carmine Marceno as undersheriff, Scott’s No. 2., Marceno became the face of the department at most press conferences and at other events.  

He received a U.S. Department of Justice Graduation Certificate from the FBI National Academy.
