Broward County officials on Wednesday night released the names of the five people killed in the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport shooting.

A release from the county states overwhelming requests from local, national and international media outlets prompted the release of names sooner than officials thought appropriate.

Broward County sheriff's vehicles park outside Terminal 2 at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017.

The names are:

  • Shirley Wells Timmons, 70, of Ohio;
  • Mary Louise Amzibel, 69, of Ohio;
  • Michael John Oehme, 57, of Council Bluffs, Iowa;
  • Olga M. Woltering, 84, of Marietta, Georgia;
  • Terry Michael Andres, 62, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

"It was Broward County's intent to officially release the names of all the victims at the appropriate time, with respect for the family's wishes and in accordance with state and federal laws. However, the media's persistence in demanding the names has hastened the release of this limited information as required by law," said Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief in a statement.
